Sunderland Days Out

Sunderland is a city of about 200,000 people located in the North-eastern part of England. It was made famous in World War II for accounting for over 245 merchant ships being manufactured there.

 

This was over a quarter of the entire quantity of ships that were manufactured in all of England during the war years. After the war, however, competition from other countries with lower labour costs caused a gradual decline in shipbuilding in Sunderland as the last shipyard in the city closed in 1988. Lewis Carroll was a famous and frequent visitor to this town and it is believed that Hylton Castle and Backhouse Park were the inspirations for his classic,
