Salisbury Days Out

Salisbury days out are probably misnamed because it takes at least a weekend to do and see everything that the area has to offer. If you are coming from a long ways away by plane, the best airport to use is Southampton airport, which is about 25 miles from Salisbury. Check out Salisbury coach hire services before you do anything as this will provide you with the flexibility you will want to come and go as the days and your stamina allow. As for things to do on your Salisbury days out, the obvious place to start is at Salisbury Cathedral. This beautiful building was built between 1220 and 1258. Its spire is the highest in England at 4,040 feet. The Cathedral has daily services as well as a daily guided tour. If you are a history buff, you will be interested in an original copy of the Magna Carta which is on display inside the cathedral. Of course you will want to take the time to visit the famous Neolithic ruin, Stonehenge if for no other reason than to get your picture taken standing in front of the ruins. A strange but fascinating stop would be the Bulford Kiwi, especially if you are Australian. This 130-metre high carving of a Kiwi was carved out of the chalk rock by Australian soldiers waiting to be shipped home after the war. The Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum has a large exhibition of everything from local ceramics to artefacts found in the surrounding area. The museum is also home to a large gallery on Stonehenge that will provide more information about the ruins than you will be able to pick up at the ruin site itself.
