Lancaster Days Out

Lancaster is a city on the western coast of England located on the banks of the River Lune. It has a port and a canal system with 50,000 residents in the city proper. It is also home to one of the most famous castles in all of England, Lancaster Castle. Planning a Lancaster day out requires, at a minimum, a visit to this historical monument to war, peace, and pestilence. When you arrive at the city, your Lancaster coach hire company of choice will be able to get to the castle. While the castle is not open to the general public, you can arrange for tours that are given on a daily week basis.

For much of its existence, Lancaster Castle has been known as a jail as much as it was used for defence in times of war. It was known for its public executions in medieval times and the last execution of an inmate was in 1910. It was used as a prisoner of war jail for captured Germans in World War I and it was returned to its role as a jail for criminals again in 1955.

The tour will allow you to see different parts of the castle such as the Keep, which is a four-storey attachment that has three-metre thick walls designed to be the last resort or hide out for the nobility. The well tower, or witches tower, as it is sometimes called, was an addition that came along around 1325. Inside, it contains two wells and three underground dungeons. This area is where the Lancashire witches were held prior to their trial and conviction in 1612.

There are many more interesting nooks and crannies you should investigate before you head for home.
