Wakefield is a popular destination for historians as it was the site of a battle during the Wars of the Roses and was also a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. Throughout the Wars of the Roses, over 1500 troops were taken prisoner along with the Royalist commander, Lieutenant General Goring and Richard Plantagenet, the Duke of York was killed in the Battle of Wakefield on 30th December 1460.
